How to keep hotel towels soft and fluffy

In hotels, towels are more than just practical – they’re part of the guest experience. A stiff towel can make even a spotless hotel bathroom feel uninviting, while a soft, fluffy towel instantly adds comfort. They convey care, quality, and attention to detail. And guests notice the difference: a soft towel is just as memorable as a rough one.

Preparing hotel spa towels

The challenge is that hotel towels are heavily used. They’re washed repeatedly, often daily, yet they still need to feel luxurious in guests’ hands. Maintaining that softness isn’t about quick fixes – it’s about following proper commercial laundry procedures and adhering to best practices.

Choose towels that can handle commercial washing machines

Softness starts with the towel itself. Towels made for home use usually don’t last long in a hotel laundry. They lose their feel quickly once they’re exposed to industrial machines and frequent washing. Hospitality-grade towels are designed for this environment.

They use cotton fibres that hold up better over time and recover more easily after washing and drying. Weight matters too. Heavier towels can feel more luxurious, but they require careful washing to prevent detergent buildup in the fabric. Using the same towel types across the hotel makes it much easier to get consistent results.

Give towels room to move in the wash

Overloading machines is one of the quickest ways to ruin towel softness. When drums are packed too tightly, towels can’t move properly. That means detergent and soil don’t rinse out properly.

It’s also easy to overuse detergent in a busy laundry. Adding a little extra might feel like a safety net, but it often does more harm than good. Residue builds up slowly, leaving towels stiff and less absorbent. Follow PDS dosing recommendations to help keep towels clean without weighing down the fibres.

Set the correct wash temperature

Heat is important for hygiene, but excessive heat can take its toll. Washing towels at very high temperatures, cycle after cycle, weakens cotton fibres and makes towels feel harsher over time.

Many of our commercial washing machines are designed to work effectively at controlled temperatures. This means hotels can meet hygiene standards while being kinder to their towels. The result is fabric that stays softer and lasts longer.

It’s all about the rinse

Many towel problems stem from poor rinsing rather than poor washing. Any detergent or alkali left behind will dry into the fibres, making towels feel rough. In a hotel setting, where different team members may be running the laundry, consistency matters. Our laundry equipment helps maintain the right chemical balance and supports reliable wash cycles, including rinsing. Find a machine that does a final rinse cycle with warm water rather than cold, as this opens up the fibres in the material and aids the drying process to ensure that your towels dry fluffier.

Fabric conditioner should be used carefully. Too much can coat fibres and reduce absorbency, which defeats the purpose of a towel.

Dry gently to protect the pile

Drying significantly affects how towels feel. Over-drying or using excessive heat flattens fibres and strips away softness. Commercial tumble dryers should be set to fully dry towels without overheating.

Taking towels out as soon as the cycle ends helps maintain their loft. A short cool-down phase can also help fibres settle before folding.

Store towels so they stay fluffy

Even perfectly laundered towels can lose their softness if they’re handled badly. Stacking them too tightly compresses the pile and makes them feel flatter over time. Loose stacking, sensible shelving and basic staff awareness all help.

When housekeeping teams understand how storage affects towel quality, softness becomes much easier to maintain across the hotel.
